We put out an invitation: come play a game with us! And folks showed up. We had a great time as Cohort 4 Fellow Duaba led us through the game - we strategized and dreamt together, with wrenches thrown into our plans that we had to adapt and adjust to.
The role playing tabletop game was rooted in two guiding principles: “speculative play” and “just futurities”. Speculative play is a way of figuring out “what might-be” or how to live through “as ifs”; it's fun and it's entertaining, but there’s an intentionality. Like when our ancestors played capoeira, stickball, masquerade: fun was the goal, but so was preparing for the times ahead. Just futurities is the work of “theorizing, narrating, imagining, and opening up possible futures”.
We’ll be rolling out a downloadable version of the game later this year for you to play, so keep an eye out for that. Make sure you’re signed up for our newsletter to be the first to know when it’s available.
