We continue to be inspired by the W.K. Kellogg Food and Community Fellowship Program that existed from 2001-2013. Alumni from that program have been pivotal in voicing the importance of leadership development and helping us design and build the vision for the Castanea Fellowship. Because of them, we are.

These fellows continue to make news. Here’s a brief roundup of some of the recent work alumni have produced or been featured in.

A Green New Deal for American Agriculture?

We tend to take the New Deal for granted today, but it changed our nation in fundamental ways. Its passage required new and often uneasy alliances. Can the history of the New Deal inform a New Green Deal for America? Take a deep dive into this smart #longread by Raj Patel (2011-2013) and Jim Goodman (2008-2009), which appeared in Jacobin Magazine. Patel is a research professor at the University of Texas, Austin, and co-author with Jason Moore of “A History of the World in Seven Cheap Things.” Goodman is a retired organic dairy farmer, family farm advocate, and president of the National Family Farm Coalition.

Four Farmers Speak Out about the Food System

Four farmers recently shared their views about the challenges of providing healthy and sustainable food and ending hunger at a Global Summit on Food Security, organized by Kellogg Fellows Leadership Alliance (KFLA) and supported by W.K. Kellogg Foundation. Malik Yakini (2011-2013), Don Bustos (2011-2013), Denise O’Brien (2002-2004), and Karen Washington represent farming in a range of geographies and locations, spanning rural and urban. This piece appears in Food Tank.
